A History of Islam in China

This program provides a chronological study of Islamic history in China, beginning with the first diplomatic contacts during the Tang Dynasty. It examines the establishment of permanent Muslim communities through trade and the social shifts occurring under the Mongol Yuan Dynasty. The lessons detail the unique cultural synthesis of the Ming era, the challenges faced during the Qing Dynasty, and the evolution of Islamic practice in the modern era. Students will analyze the relationship between Islamic theology and Chinese philosophy, the significance of the maritime Silk Road, and the development of the distinct Hui identity through various historical periods.
